10 Best Design Retainer Agencies for Series B AI Startups - August 2026

At Series B you already have designers, and that is what makes the retainer decision hard. We checked 10 agencies on five public criteria.

Siddarth Ponangi

Founder, Studio Maydit

Design partner for AI companies

We design products and websites for AI companies that help them look and feel like a category leader.

The best design retainer agencies for Series B AI startups in 2026 are Studio Maydit, Foundey, Kvalifik, SuperSkills, BX Studio, Flow Ninja, Refokus, 8020, Digidop, and Edgar Allan. Studio Maydit and Foundey lead for companies whose in-house designers are already at capacity and need senior help that does not need managing. Flow Ninja and Edgar Allan are the wrong fit for most teams here, the first because it publishes no client names to check, the second because its process is built around large branded programmes.

You already have designers. That is what makes this decision hard.

At seed you hired an agency because there was nobody. At Series B there is a head of design, two or three people under them, and a backlog that is longer than it was when the team was one person. Adding an agency now is not filling a hole. It is putting a second team next to your first one and hoping the seam between them does not become the problem.

That seam is where these arrangements fail. Your designers have three years of context: why the settings page looks like that, which customer complained, what was tried and abandoned. The agency has none of it, and every question they ask costs your team an hour. Handled badly, the retainer creates more work for the people it was meant to relieve, and your head of design starts quietly routing everything back in-house.

There is a second thing happening at this stage, and it is the reason many Series B companies buy a retainer at all. Three years of shipping fast has left you with four generations of interface. Different button behaviour, three date pickers, a settings area nobody has touched since the second engineer built it. Everyone knows. Nobody will ever prioritise it against a customer commitment, because it is never the most urgent thing in any given week.

The ten studios below are ranked on how well they work alongside a design team that already exists.

Most AI products look the same. Yours doesn't have to.

How we picked these agencies

This is a teardown, not a directory listing. For each agency we read their own site and their public record, then checked five things you can verify yourself in an afternoon:

  1. Platform depth. Is one craft their real specialism, or one line on a long service menu?

  2. AI-sector proof. Named AI clients and published work, or just the word "AI" in the copy?

  3. Pricing. Do they publish a minimum at all, or keep it behind a call?

  4. Team shape. Who actually does the work, and how many clients are they carrying at once?

  5. Their own site. Distinctive, or the same template as everyone else on this list?

That last one gets skipped most often. An agency's own website is the only project where nobody overruled them. No client committee, no inherited brand book. If their own site is forgettable, you have found their ceiling.

Every fact below comes from the agency's own site or a public listing. Where a number is not public, we say so rather than guessing.

What goes wrong when you already have a design team

Three failures show up specifically in companies that have staff designers, and none of them appear in an earlier-stage engagement.

The retainer creates work instead of absorbing it. The agency joins, and every task now needs a written brief, a walkthrough, and a review from someone whose calendar was already full. Your head of design becomes an account manager for a supplier, which is not the job they took. Six weeks in, they are doing the work themselves again because it is faster. The way out is to give the agency a whole area rather than a stream of tasks. One surface, owned end to end, with the authority to make decisions inside it. Managing an owner is a fraction of the cost of managing a helper.

Both teams design the same thing differently. Your team ships a new flow on Monday. The agency ships one on Wednesday. They are both good and they do not match, because nobody wrote down which patterns are settled. Within two quarters your product has two accents. This is not a talent problem, it is a documentation problem, and it is worth two weeks of somebody's time before the retainer starts. A short, honest record of the components that exist and the rules that are not negotiable will save more than it costs by the second month.

The cleanup gets promised and never scheduled. Almost every Series B retainer is sold partly on fixing accumulated interface debt, and almost none of it happens. Something urgent arrives in week two and the reconciliation work moves to next month, permanently. If the debt is genuinely why you are buying, protect it. Ring-fence a fixed share of the monthly hours for it, agree that share cannot be borrowed against, and review it monthly. Work that competes with customer commitments loses every time, so it has to sit outside that competition.

1. Studio Maydit: A Top-Rated Design Agency for AI Founders

Studio Maydit is a web and product design studio working with AI founders in the US, UK, and Europe. The studio builds websites in Framer, Webflow, and custom code, and continues into product design after the site ships.

The clearest outcome is Dualite, where design work supporting a repositioned ICP helped the product reach 100,000+ users in seven months. Recent clients include Wave, PixelFlow, Mi-VAD, and 15 other AI and SaaS teams.

Websites can be bought two ways. Fixed scope runs three to four weeks and suits teams with a launch date. Teams that keep shipping take a monthly retainer instead, covering new pages, campaigns, and product design, with no long lock-in. Fixed-scope projects end with a diagnosis of what is leaking in the product, not a handoff and goodbye.

2. Foundey

Foundey is a San Francisco studio founded in 2021, working in Figma, with DemandIQ, Traycer, and Sero AI named, plus published AI client work. Design-only is an advantage in this specific arrangement. You already have engineers and a build process, so a partner who works in Figma and hands into your existing pipeline creates fewer seams than one who wants to ship the code as well.

They publish no pricing and no team size, their named clients are earlier-stage than you, and a Figma-only studio cannot help when the bottleneck turns out to be implementation rather than design.

3. Kvalifik

Kvalifik is a Copenhagen team of 11 to 50, founded in 2015, working in Webflow, with Veo, Maersk, and Relesys named, plus published AI client work. Maersk is the useful reference for a company at your stage. Working inside a large organisation means fitting into someone else's process rather than imposing your own, which is exactly the skill a retainer alongside an existing team requires.

They publish no pricing, their platform strength is web rather than product interface, and a Copenhagen team overlaps with US mornings only, which slows decisions for a team on the west coast.

4. SuperSkills

SuperSkills is a small studio of 1 to 10 in Walnut Creek, California, working across platforms, with The Cut named and published AI client work. A team this small will not send you a junior. For a Series B company whose in-house designers are already good, the only useful outside help is someone at least as senior as the people they are working next to, and small studios are where that is most reliable.

They name only one client, publish no founding year and no pricing, and a team of this size can take one meaningful commitment at a time, so their availability decides more than their fit does.

5. BX Studio

BX Studio is a New York team of 11 to 50 working in Webflow, with a published minimum and Reddit, Headspace, ASAPP, and Verifone named, plus published AI client work. Reddit and ASAPP are both products with long-lived interfaces and real accumulated complexity, which is the situation your product is now in. That is different work from designing something new.

They publish no founding year, their strength leans marketing rather than deep product surfaces, and a team of this size will want defined scope, which suits an owned area better than a shared backlog.

6. Flow Ninja

Flow Ninja is a Belgrade team of 11 to 50, founded in 2018, working in Webflow. They are a production shop with real throughput, and throughput is genuinely useful here. If your in-house team is doing the thinking and the bottleneck is getting things built consistently, that is the gap they fill.

They publish no client names, which makes their record impossible to check, and no pricing either. Their AI-sector proof is partial, and production capacity is the wrong purchase if what you actually need is senior judgement.

7. Refokus

Refokus is a remote German team of 11 to 50, founded in 2021, working in Webflow, with Mural, BASF, Spotify, and Yahoo named, along with BCG. Mural is the closest analogue to a Series B product problem. It is a collaborative tool with years of accumulated interface, where new features have to fit next to old ones without making the whole thing louder.

They publish no pricing, their AI-sector proof is partial, and their visual approach is ambitious in a way that can pull against an established product's existing patterns.

8. 8020

8020 works out of San Francisco and New York, founded in 2014, in Webflow, with Wave, Superlist, Pilot.com, Vanta, and Circle named. Vanta and Pilot are both companies that grew through exactly the stage you are at, adding surface after surface while trying to keep the product coherent. A studio that watched that happen twice has seen the failure modes before.

They publish neither pricing nor team size, their AI-sector proof is partial, and their work is stronger on marketing surfaces than on dense product interfaces.

9. Digidop

Digidop is a Paris studio of 1 to 10, founded in 2021, working in Webflow, with a published minimum and TSE Energy, Ramify, and StreamNative named. StreamNative is infrastructure software with a technical audience, which means they have worked on interfaces where the user knows more than the designer. That humility is useful next to an in-house team who know your product deeply.

Their AI-sector proof is partial, they are very small, and a Paris team gives a US company a morning window rather than a full working day.

10. Edgar Allan

Edgar Allan is an Atlanta team of 51 to 200, founded in 2014, working in Webflow, with Porsche, Duracell, and NCR named. They lead with writing, and at Series B that is worth more than it sounds. A lot of what feels like interface confusion in a maturing product is actually language confusion: three words for the same object, invented by three different teams.

They publish no pricing, their AI-sector proof is partial, and their process is built around large branded programmes rather than a steady monthly relationship with an in-house team.

How to choose between them

Sort by what your in-house team cannot get to.

The roadmap is bigger than the team, and the work is senior. Studio Maydit or SuperSkills.

Design is done, implementation is the queue. Flow Ninja or Foundey.

Marketing surfaces have fallen years behind the product. 8020 or BX Studio.

Nothing is named consistently anywhere. Edgar Allan or Refokus.

One test before signing. Introduce them to your head of design, not to a founder, and ask afterwards whether that conversation created work or removed it. Your in-house lead will know within twenty minutes whether this partner will need managing. That judgement is worth more than any portfolio review, because a retainer that adds to their week will be quietly abandoned by month three whatever the contract says.
