You have felt it. You open your site next to three competitors and you cannot tell them apart. Same dark gradient, same faint glow behind the hero, same vague line about intelligence and automation, same abstract orb where the product should be. It works. It just looks like the 15th version of a thing everyone launched this month. That quiet feeling, that we look generic, is the most common 11pm thought in AI right now, and it is worth taking seriously.
Why every AI startup looks the same in 2026
Because baseline design became free. The same tools that let you vibe-code a working product in a weekend also hand everyone the same defaults: the same template hero, the same gradient, the same component library, the same tasteful-but-anonymous aesthetic. When the floor rises for everyone at once, the floor becomes the look. A site that would have looked sharp three years ago now reads as the default, because it is the default.
The result is a strange inversion. Good enough design used to be a competitive advantage. Now good enough is the thing that makes you invisible. When every AI company clears the same bar, clearing the bar is not distinctive. It is camouflage.
The tells of a generic AI website
If several of these are true, you are probably blending in: the hero shows an abstract 3D shape or a glowing orb instead of the actual product. The headline names a technology (AI-powered, built on GPT) instead of an outcome. The whole page could have its logo swapped for a competitor's and still make sense. There is no point of view, no opinion, nothing a real person clearly decided. It is polished and completely forgettable.
None of these are quality problems in the traditional sense. The page is not broken. It is worse than broken. It is anonymous.
What looking generic actually costs you
The cost is episodic and it lands at the worst moments. When you raise, more people look and look harder, and a template site undersells a company with real capital behind it. When you launch, the site is the thing being screenshotted and shared, and generic does not get shared. When you sell into enterprise, buyers read a forgettable site as a forgettable company. When you hire, the best designers and engineers judge you by how you look before they read a word.
Investors funded a version of the future. If your site looks like everyone else's, you are asking them, and every candidate and customer, to take your ambition on faith rather than see it. That gap between what you are building and how it looks is a tax you pay on every one of those conversations.
How to actually stand out
Start with positioning, not pixels. The reason most AI sites are vague is that the positioning underneath them is vague. Name your category. Say who it is for and what changes. A site can only be as specific as the thinking behind it.
Show the real product. The fastest way to stop looking generic is to put the actual interface on the page. A real screenshot, even an imperfect one, is more distinctive than any illustration, because it is yours and no one else's.
Have a point of view. The companies the tribe reveres, Linear, Vercel, Raycast, do not look expensive because they spent more. They look like someone with taste made deliberate decisions and left fingerprints. A distinctive typographic system, a restrained and specific colour story, and real opinions about layout beat any amount of gradient.
Treat taste as the moat. When the tools are commoditised, the thing that cannot be commoditised is judgment. In 2026, good enough is not good enough, and taste is the moat. It is the one part of your company a competitor cannot vibe-code overnight.
